Brockenhurst Cycle Routes

Cycle Routes

If two wheels is your idea of heaven, then the New Forest is pure nirvana; whether it’s on or off road, there are more than 120 routes to explore, along rivers, bridleways and tracks. Whatever your ability (you don’t need to be Mark Cavendish or Dame Sarah Storey), there are Brockenhurst cycle routes to enjoy, both on and off-road. Wherever you point your front forks, there’s always a great breakfast to set you up at our hotels or else you can return to a warm welcome and a cold beer…

Here’s just a selection of some of our favourite cycle routes:

Get the wheels rolling

Follow in the footsteps of (or should that be wheels?) the old railway on this nine mile route which begins at the present-day station, and then heads along ‘Castleman’s Corkscrew’, a disused railway line so called because of the shape it cut across the forest and Charles Castleman who promoted it. Plenty of fresh air and wonderful views, it’s a great one for all the family.

A good 20+ mile route to consider is the Hatchet Pond – Mill Dam Loop; mostly over paved surfaces, you’ll hopefully spy wild ponies in Hollands Wood, drop off at Woods Cyclery for a cake and a brew, before heading back into Brockenhurst.

A bit more challenging

If you want something more challenging still, how about the Ober Water Ford Loop? It’ll take you about three hours and covers over 20 miles, but you’re rewarded with some beautiful trails and scenery.
Starting from Brockenhurst train station, it’s a route of contrasts – from verdant forest to Dead Tree Moor and the eponymous ford. You’ll need a good level of fitness, but you’ll be richly rewarded.

Top of the list for adventurous routes is this gem to Burley, which takes in the old steam railway track from Brockenhurst to Ringwood. Only a few miles are available as a cycle track, after which it continues through woodland trails and quiet lanes before returning via ornamental woods. Explore the former smuggler’s village of Burley and stop off at the local cider farm for some well-earned refreshment.
