Who doesn’t love a festival? No, we don’t necessarily mean the likes of Glastonbury; there’s a myriad of other New Forest festivals to be enjoyed across 2022, some of which do feature music, but not all.
From folk music to fairies to furry friends, the New Forest has its fair share of great events. Best of all we have plenty of hotels dotted around the New Forest where you can recharge, refresh and rest your head after a busy day ’festivaling’ – if there is such a word.
Here’s a selection of some of the great New Forest festivals to start putting in your calendar for 2022:
Although it’s a ‘small, family-run festival’, the New Forest Folk Festival sure pulls in some big names – Lindisfarne and Ralph McTell just two of the folk legends billed for 2022.
It’s all set to take place from July 6-10 next year, at Plaitford near Romsey, on the very edge of the New Forest. Despite the star-studded line-up, which also includes the brilliant Joe Broughton’s Conservatoire Folk Ensemble, tickets are well priced at £105 for an adult five-day ticket which includes camping. Children 5-15 are half price and the under 5s get in for free. See you there!
If it’s folklore and fairytales rather than folk music, then perhaps the New Forest Fairy Festival might be more your cup of tea. It’s ‘where magic happens’, apparently.
Taking place across the weekend of August 13/14 at Burley Park near Burley (so Burley Manor and Burley Huts would be an ideal base!) it certainly sounds magical; a Winter Enchantress Opening Ceremony; Storytelling with the Earth Fairy; and The Fairy’s Ball Theatre Show are just a few of the events and attractions. The good news is that the prices are no horror story – adult tickets are £12, children 6-16 are £7 and fives and under just £2.
Ok, so it’s not technically a ‘festival’ in name, but the New Forest and Hampshire County Show has all the key ingredients – over 600 stalls, a local producers’ market and of course the main show ring – including showjumping, animal parade and tractor tug of war. There are also more competitions than we can fit in here -from art to baking, blacksmiths to livestock.
It all takes place from July 26-28 at the Showground in Brockenhurst.
Ticket prices have yet to be announced, but under 5s get in for free.
