Ashurst Cycle Routes

Cycle Routes

Cycling in and around Ashurst is a delight, whatever your ability or aspirations. Whether you’re a beginner or a regular weekend warrior on a mountain bike, the New Forest, especially Ashurst, is blessed with over 140 miles of car-free, approved trails. The scenery of ancient woodland, heaths and chocolate box villages mean every ride is packed with things to see – not least the incredible flora and fauna you’ll be spotting en route.
So, to quote Freddie Mercury, ‘get on your bike and ride!’…

Here are a few of our favourite Ashurst cycle routes:

Horses in the New Forest

Woodland near Ashurst

Starting on Deerleap Lane, this is a lovely short ride of just under 4 miles; there’s an alternative starting point at the nearby campsite. Lots of natural light along the way, this relatively short cycle ride along well-made tracks is mostly on level ground – so hurrah! No hills! Very family friendly – although it does include a short section of road.

The Woods Cyclery New Forest

Bramber Castle to The Cabin at Berretts Farm loop

An easy route of just over 10 miles, you can pretty much start and finish with a fabulous cup of coffee at The Cabin – and perhaps reward yourself at the end with a slice of cake?

Across the River Adur and past St Andrew & St Cuthman’s Church, you’ll pass the ruins of Bramber Castle before heading past The Cabin once more, before the ride officially ends at The Old Railway pub, which, you’ll be glad to hear, is very walker and cyclist friendly!

Bikes in the new forest

Clayton Tunnel to Underhill Lane loop

This one’s a little trickier, and twice the distance, but it’s on mostly paved surfaces.

Head along the Downs Link and past Clayton Tunnel, you’ll then pass along Underhill Lane before a pit stop at Proper Cycling & Coffee in Hassocks (there’s also one in Uckfield), before the last few miles back to the bus station starting point.

Ashurst to Lyndhurst loop

Our final suggestion is this lovely 14-mile loop which starts and ends at Ashurst Railway Station.

It’s a lovely route mainly on roads, which takes in some lovely sights and good stop-off points (or pints) including the Bold Forester pub, crossing the Beaulieu River and Bolton’s Bench. For a particularly stunning cycle, visit in August and September to catch the heathland in its full glory.
