Ashurst Fishing

Fishing

Whether it’s on lakes or at sea, the New Forest has plenty to offer anglers. There are a myriad of Ashurst lake fishing options available; be advised – some of the areas you can coarse fish are run by Forestry England – in order to fish here you will need a Forestry England permit in addition to a rod licence. Across the waterways of the New Forest you can catch a whopping 20 species of fish, ranging from eels and pike to brown trout. Head out onto the Solent for a spot of sea fishing, and the potential bounty includes the likes of mackerel and sea bass, depending on the season.

Here are just a few of the lakes, fisheries and sea charters that you can seek out on an Ashurst angling break:

Lakes breaks

Broadlands Lake Coarse Fishery

A 26 acre fishery fed from the chalk stream rivers of the Test; in one year alone over 4,000 double figure carp were caught including more than 500 over 20lb in weight. The fishery is divided into a Lower Lake, Match Lake and River – with carp, roach and eels in the Lower Lake; carp, break, tench, roach and perch in the Match Lake; and the river home to trout, salmon, Chub, grayling, dace, pike, carp, bream, perch and roach.

Rockbourne Trout Fishery

One of the county’s finest trout fisheries, you’ll find six lakes across 55 acres of unspoilt woodland and pasture. The stock is rainbow, brown, blue, liliac and sandy trout, in addition to arctic char in winter. There’s also tuition and duck shooting available.

Everton Grange Lake

Two small lakes containing carp and tench, there’s a limit of 1 rod per angler and juniors must be accompanied by an adult. Guest tickets are available.

Moors Valley Country Park and Forest

There’s a myriad of things to do here, and that includes some decent fishing; there are roach, rudd, tench, perch and dace all regularly caught here, while during the summer holidays rangers run fishing tuition for children. Fishing is permitted from 15th June to 15th March.

Orchard Lakes

Something for everyone across five different lakes in 56 acres of farmland. Everything from match fishing (fish weighing in at over 300lb!!), to species hunting with large carp, bream and tench to be caught.
One of the smaller lakes, Jake’s Pond, is ideal for youngsters and beginners. Fishing coaching and tuition is also available.

Mopley Farm Cadland Fishery

The fishery covers four lakes and 15 acres of water, and is stocked with ghost, mirror, common and leather carp from 10lbs to over 20lbs, plus a variety of other fish. Day or season permits are available – and the lakes are also available for hire by clubs.

Leominstead Trout Fishery

A beautiful four-acre lake stocked with rainbow trout and some resident brown trout, Leominstead is limited to 16 rods, and guest tickets can only be purchased by members.

Person Sea Fishing

All at sea

If you prefer to go sea fishing in the Solent, then there are opportunities aplenty to join in on fishing trips from several places in the New Forest.

There are charters running from Keyhaven – Reel Easy Charters and Greg Pitt Sea Fishing to name but two. There are scheduled trips or you can charter the boat for yourself. Over in Buckler’s Hard, Lazy Daze Fishing Charters offer half or full days, while in Lymington there are a few options including Hermit Charters and Lady Anne Charters. Alternatively, you can always simply fish for bass and crab from Lymington’s sea wall.

Where to stay

When you’ve had a busy day’s fishing – whether that’s off the back of a boat or on a stunning lakeside – you’ll need somewhere to refresh and rest your head. If you’re looking around Ashurst, we can make some great recommendations from The New Forest Collection.

Over in Beaulieu there’s Beaulieu Inn – the perfect base to relax and reconnect with nature. This former coaching inn is dog-friendly and full of character. In Lyndhurst, there’s Forest Lodge – a beautiful townhouse which blends heritage charm with urban style interiors – with incredible steaks and brasserie classics to match. Nearby is the equally inviting Bartley Lodge in Cadnam, our Grade-II listed 18th century country house, the former home of ‘father of geology’ Charles Lyell. Restful rooms include rainfall showers and sumptuous linens to help send you off for a recharging night’s sleep…
