Whether you enjoy river, sea or coarse angling, there are ample opportunities to enjoy fishing in the New Forest, specifically in Lymington. From eels and pike to brown trout, there are more than 20 species of fish to be found in the New Forest’s waterways – not forgetting the opportunities to be had on the Solent in Lymington, where you can catch mackerel and sea bass, depending on the season.
As one of the largest and most historical towns in the New Forest, Lymington harbour houses a large array of sailing and fishing boats. The Isle of Wight ferry also departs regularly. The area is known best for its good fishing habitat, but you’ll need to be prepared to move around a little as there are many different alternatives in the area. During the summer be prepared to catch mullet, bass, eels and flounders; in the winter months it’s mullet and flounders.
If you’d prefer not to be in the water itself and would like to stay on land, then there’s an opportunity to fish for bass and crab during the summer months or flounder in the winter – from Pennington’s sea wall, located west of Lymington. This is a unique area with conditions often more suited to shore fishing.
Not too far from Lymington, there are some incredible beaches for casting your lines in Milford-on-sea and Hurst Spit; both are also great spots for catching mackerel in the summer.
What’s more, there are several monthly and annual shore fishing competitions held throughout the year at various beaches along the Hampshire and Dorset coast, as well as leagues and three open shore competitions during the year. Top tip: be sure to take a walk along the beaches and get chatting to locals, as they’ll soon reveal popular places, species, tactics and baits!
Boat fishing in Lymington is extremely popular and split into two categories: large boats and shallow boats. The large boat section has something for everyone and for all levels of skill and competitiveness when it comes to the monthly large boat competitions out of Lymington. The Shallow (small) boat section is fished from privately owned boats, which stay within a designated area, with competitions running throughout the year.
Of course, if you’d like more of a professional experience then you may wish to go fishing with some of Lymington’s experts on a fishing excursion. Charter a boat through the likes of Hermit Charters and Lady Anne Charters of Lymington – both offer exciting fishing experiences from this historic seaside town.
