How to make a Christmas wreath

There’s simply nothing quite like getting stuck into some Christmas DIY fun to kickstart the festive season, and what better opportunity to do so than by creating your own beautiful wreath to proudly hang on your front door and show off to the whole neighbourhood? It’s the perfect activity for catching up with friends and spending some festive quality time with family.

Step by step guide to making your own wreath

Step 1: Prepare your wreath-making items by cutting all of your materials into segments. If you’ve got a structured, symmetrical wreath in mind, then you’ll want to aim to clip your branches into 4-6 inch segments. If you’re looking to create a more natural and ‘wild’ looking wreath, you’ll need to cut your branches into a variety of different sizes from 4-8 inches, to give it that sporadic and effortlessly beautiful look. Keep your branches organised in piles sorted by size for ease.

Step 2: Now the real fun begins! You can now start adding your materials to your wreath. Start by making a small bouquet of materials in your hand and then wrap the wire around your bouquet of materials three to five times to secure them in place. Top tip: Be sure to pull really tight each time you wrap the wire around your materials because as time goes on, your materials will start to dry and shrink slightly. Continue adding materials to the frame and once your frame is full you can always go in and add more details; a pine cone here or perhaps a sprig of rosemary there.

Step 3: The final step to completing your charming wreath is to tie it off. You’ll need to wrap your wire an additional 2-3 times and then snip it. Then you’ll turn your wreath over and thread the end of the wire through the frame, making sure to secure the wire in the frame so that it is facing outwards to avoid scratching the surface you’ll be hanging it on.

Step 4: (Optional) You can now take a step back and admire your fantastic work, and of course it’s not too late to add those final finishing touches!

Step 5: (Recommended) Take your wreath home, hang it on your desired surface and snap plenty of stunning Instagram-worthy pictures of it to show to all of your family and friends.
