Beaulieu Walks In The New Forest

Walks

Beaulieu is blessed with a plethora of walks on its doorstep – from a relaxing stroll to something a bit more challenging, all the way to gorgeous river walks.

However you choose to spend your day and whatever one of the striking Beaulieu or river walks you decide upon, you can do so safely in the knowledge that there’ll be a warm welcome, great food and drinks to reward yourself
at The Drift, our award-winning pub and restaurant near Beaulieu Inn.

If you are walking further afield, don’t forget our other hotels in the New Forest Collection that may be on your route – Forest Lodge in Lyndhurst (8.5 miles), Bartley Lodge (10.9 miles), Burley Manor (13.5 miles), Moorhill House (13.5 miles) and Burley Huts (13.5 miles).

Bluebells In The New Forest

History hike (2 miles each way)

A really popular, short river trail from beautiful Beaulieu to historic Buckler’s Hard. The shipyard is where Nelson’s famous fleet was built – three of which featured in the Battle of Trafalgar. Take time to visit the Maritime Museum, or just explore this quaint hamlet.

Food, glorious food (2.2 miles each way)

Another nice easy walk from Beaulieu, with the main path flat gravel and grass – although it can be muddy after rain. The focus here is the food, though – the walk has plenty of highlighted stop-offs where you can eat, pick up local produce and learn more about what is grown and produced in the area.

Aeroplanes

Chocks away! (3.5 miles)

An easy to follow route over open heathland around RAF Beaulieu, which was used in the Second World War – on level ground with virtually no gradients, mostly all along firm tracks.

If you want to make it longer, combine this with a walk around the adjacent East Boldre Airfield to create a figure of eight route which extends the walk to just over 5 miles.

A pleasant stroll through a wonderful landscape, and will also be appreciated by history and wildlife enthusiasts.

Sea

There and back (20.3 miles)

One of the longer Beaulieu walks, but lovely nonetheless. A circular trail from Beaulieu and back, following the Solent Way to Lymington, then circling back across Beaulieu Heath.

There’s plenty to see and do along the way to break it up a little with landmarks including Lymington Obelisk, St Leonard’s Barn, Sowley Pond and, of course, Buckler’s Hard.

Beaulieu to Buckler’s Hard Walk

This easy walk is perfect for all types of walkers, novices or pros. This walk follows the route of the wildlife-rich Beaulieu River and finishes at coastal Bucklers Hard, where Lord Nelson’s favourite ship Agamemnon was built way back in 1781. The river walk starts in the village of Beaulieu, next to the National Motor Museum. Follow the signs for the Beaulieu River Walk and you will soon find yourself on a path that runs alongside the river. The path is mostly flat and well-maintained, making it suitable for all abilities, family strolls and dog waking. As you walk, you will notice a variety of habitats, including woodland, meadows, and salt marsh. Keep an eye out for wildlife, such as birds, deer, and the New Forest ponies!

Beaulieu River Walk

This shorter walk is a good option if you are looking for a more low-impact, leisurely stroll. The walk starts in the village of Beaulieu and follows the Beaulieu River for about 1.5 miles.

The path is mostly flat and well-maintained, making it suitable for all abilities and young families where young children may want to get out and about. Along this walk, you will pass through woodland and meadows, and you may be lucky enough to see wildlife such as native birds and deer.

This walk should only take around an hour and a half and ends at a point where the Beaulieu River meets the Solent. Here you can enjoy views of the Solent and the Isle of Wight and even stop off for a little picnic or a drink in a local pub nearby.

Keeping Copse Walk

This 2 mile walk is a good option if you are looking for a more challenging walk. The walk starts in the village of Beaulieu and follows the Beaulieu River for about 2 miles. The path is mostly flat and well-maintained, but there are a few sections where it can be muddy or slippery, so probably best to bring your walking shoes, wellies and a change of clothing just in case it does get messy. As you walk, you will pass through woodland, meadows, and a salt marsh, perfect for a scenic stroll and some lovely pictures.
