We’re going to the zoo, how about you?

With over 140 acres of beautiful parkland to explore, and hundreds of animals to get to know, Marwell Zoo is a very special place indeed. You’re encouraged to book in advance for this popular attraction that draws visitors from all over the country throughout the year, and think of it as a walking safari, so come kitted out with sensible shoes and appropriate outdoor gear (pith helmet optional…)

Friendly staff are there from the outset to lend a hand and answer any questions you and your curious explorers might have, and exhibits like the Tropical House rainforest experience, Wallaby Walkthrough and the Aviary feel fully immersive, so there’s lots to learn at the same time as having fun.

Awaken the explorer within

Marwell’s biggest exhibit to date is the breathtaking Wildlife Explorers, where you’re invited to awaken the explorer within you and discover how it feels to study the white rhinos, oryx and zebra up close within enclosures that give a real sense of the animals’ natural habitats.

Budding photographers are encouraged to take pictures from the raised observation boardwalk and here, just as in other areas of the zoo, there are tracks and trails to enjoy as well as educational sessions to deepen your knowledge.

Those who prefer to take a more leisurely approach to their wildlife adventuring can hop onto the Road Train that takes you more slowly around the perimeter, spotting your favourite animals as you go. Was that really the smoky grey snow leopard? You’ll have to look closely to make sure, before earning your explorer certificate.

A feast of fun

There are five fantastic playgrounds at Marwell, one of which has a wheelchair-accessible roundabout and slide so all children can play safely. There are also plenty of places to stop and refuel, whether you bring your own picnic or choose to eat at one of the zoo’s many cafes. And talking of feeding time, do get to Marwell Zoo early to find out which animals will be sharing their meal times with you – whether it’s the penguins, red pandas, meerkats or lions, it’s sure to be a feast of fun.

All in all, you’re encouraged to give yourselves at least five hours to spend at Marwell, making the most of everything this incredible place has to offer before returning to your New Forest home-from-home nearby.
