Sunday Roast Recipe

A Sunday roast has become a culturally iconic staple that has been passed on and enjoyed through generations with many people having fond memories of enjoying a Sunday roast with their families. A Sunday roast recipe differs from family to family and there are countless ways to prepare a Sunday roast. The type of meat used can vary widely, with beef, lamb, pork, and chicken being the most popular choices. The vegetables used can also differ depending on what is in season and what your family prefers, as well as all the different ways to prepare various vegetables.

Every family has their own way of preparing a Sunday roast, and the recipe is often passed down through generations or taught to younger generations when cooking. Some families may add their own unique twists to the traditional meal, such as using different herbs and spices or preparing the vegetables in a different way, or even adding a unique addition that suits the tastes of your family.

Ingredients needed to make Sunday Roast

As mentioned above, everyone will have their own recipes and routine to make the perfect Sunday roast recipe, but below we’ve listed a traditional Sunday roast recipe’s ingredients.

Step-by-step instructions to make Sunday Roast

For a tasty roast beef Sunday roast dinner, the recipe is below.

Ingredients:

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 200°C/180°C fan/gas mark 6.
  2. Peel and chop the potatoes, carrots, and parsnips into similar-sized chunks. Cut the onion into wedges and crush the garlic cloves.
  3. Put the vegetables and garlic into a large roasting tin. Drizzle with olive oil and season with salt, pepper, and thyme leaves. Toss the vegetables to coat them evenly.
  4. Place the beef joint on top of the vegetables in the roasting tin. Season with salt and pepper to your taste.
  5. Roast the beef and vegetables in the oven for 20 minutes per 500g, plus an additional 20 minutes for medium rare. So, for a 1.5 kg joint, cook for 1 hour and 20 minutes.
  6. After 45 minutes of cooking, take the roasting tin out of the oven and baste the beef with the juices in the tin.
  7. After the cooking time is up, take the beef out of the oven and cover it with foil. Let it rest for at least 15 minutes before carving.
  8. While the beef is resting, make the gravy. Pour the juices from the roasting tin into a pan and heat on medium-high. Add 2 tbsp of flour and stir until it forms a paste. Gradually add 500ml of beef stock, stirring constantly, until the gravy thickens. Simmer for a few minutes, then season with salt and pepper to taste.
  9. Serve the roast beef with the vegetables, gravy, and other trimmings of your choice (such as Yorkshire pudding, horseradish sauce, or mustard).
