‘No-yeast Bread’

If the supermarket shelves are empty, don’t worry, this easy no-yeast recipe from our fab Collection Head Chef, David Palmer and his very own little team of bakers will see you through.

You’ll need:

  • 4 cups of plain flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 310 ml milk/water
  • 1 tbsp oil/melted butter

1. Mix the flour, salt and baking powder together in a large bowl.

2. Make a well in the centre, add the milk or water and oil or butter and mix well.

3. Tip onto a lightly floured work surface and knead for around 10 minutes.

4. Once the dough is satin-smooth, place it in a lightly oiled bowl and cover with cling film. Leave to prove for 15 – 20 minutes.

5. Line a baking tray with baking parchment and grease with butter. Roll the dough out on a floured surface till 1 1/ 2″ thick.

6. Place onto the greased baking sheet and cut a cross about 6cm long into the top of the loaf with a sharp knife.

7. Heat oven to 220°C/fan 200°C/gas 7. Bake till risen and golden brown (about 35-40 minutes) and the loaf sounds hollow when tapped underneath. Cool on a wire rack – delicious!
