EXPLORE THIS AUTUMN
New Forest Walking Festival
This year we see the return of the New Forest Walking Festival. Last year the festival saw almost 2,000 people enjoy 80 behind the scenes family strolls, history hikes, wildlife walks and more. All walks were expert-led by the New Forest National Park Authority and partner organisations, helping people learn more about the National Park.
Again this year, the festival boasts 80 guided walks led by knowledgeable experts to help you discover more about the history, heritage and wildlife of the New Forest. The autumn is a beautiful time of year for a walk around the National Park, with fiery foliage providing the perfect backdrop for exploring the gentle landscape that surrounds us.
The majority of the guided walks are accessible by public transport, and many walks are free or discounted if you arrive by bus, train, bike or on food.
After some walking tips for the festival? National Park Lead Ranger Gillie Molland shares her’s with us:
Clothing: It’s important to wear suitable footwear, warm clothing and waterproofs, as the weather is often unpredictable and parts of some walks can be a little muddy!
Food and drink: We’ve provided some specific advice for all of our walks about whether you need to bring a packed lunch or enjoy some food at local pubs and cafes. However it is advisable to carry a drink, snacks and any medication you may need. Remember to alert your walk leaders of any relevant medical conditions and remember to take your litter home.
Animals: The National Park is famous for roaming ponies, cattle, donkeys and pigs. They’re owned by people of the New Forest known as commoners.
Dogs: Dogs are welcome on some of the walks – look at each walk’s webpage for further details.
Walk duration and times: Times and durations of the walks are estimate and can vary according to conditions and the numbers of walkers on each day.
Family walks: Although children are welcome on all the walks, some are more suitable than others for families. Look at each walks page for further details.
