Horse Riding

Play the word association game with someone and say ‘New Forest’, and we think a fair few will come back with ‘ponies’.

It’s what the area is famous for, but these are wild horses who are left free to roam the beautiful woodland and countryside. However, the good news for horse lovers is that there is plenty of opportunity to go horse riding in the New Forest – so grab your jodhpurs and saddle up…

Choose your terrain

Whether it’s a countryside hack or carriage ride, there’s no shortage of bridleways and tracks to explore if you’re horse riding in the New Forest. While it’s a paradise for horse and rider, it’s always best to do your homework before pony trekking in the New Forest – it’s such a unique experience that even the most seasoned rider can be taken by surprise.

The terrain is so varied – from bridleways to open heathland to coastal routes – that there’s something for everyone – from absolute beginners to seasoned riders, or a leisurely trailer ride. If you’re unsure, take expert advice from one of many New Forest riding stables and centres, who may well advise a guided hack.

A great reference guide is the National Park Authority’s website.

Choose your ride

It doesn’t matter if you’re a seasoned rider or don’t know one end of a horse from the other (clue: the tail is the swishy bit), there’s a New Forest ride for you – and a stables or school to suit.

Formerly known as Burley Riding Stables, Brockenhurst Riding Stables offers one and two-hour New Forest pony rides for the complete novice and advanced riders; a livery stable that’s been under the same ownership for over 45 years. Ford Farm Stables is a riding school and livery yard just outside Brockenhurst which offers private and group rides and lessons for all ability, from complete beginners to the more experienced rider. They also cater for those with special needs, learning difficulties or disabilities.

Whether it’s lessons, hacking or trekking you’re after, there are plenty of other New Forest horse riding places – Bagnum Equestrian Centre, Ringwood offers hacks, walk outs, lessons, courses and livery; Eastmoors Riding School, St Leonards can provide lessons, livery and woodland trekking; there are lessons, pony fun days, walk outs, picnic rides and livery on offer at Arniss Equestrian Centre, Fordingbridge; and Fir Tree Farm Equestrian Centre, Fordingbridge will be able to help with lessons, hacking and ‘equine reiki’. We’re intrigued too…

If, for some reason, you don’t find what you’re looking for from that list, try Burley Villa School of Riding (lessons); Sims Cottage Stables; Coombe Stables; and Tilefield Equestrian.

Happy hacking!
