Home to Beaulieu Hotel
Beaulieu is a historical and charming location with its famous village situated at the head of the famous Beaulieu River and only a few miles down the road from Beaulieu Hotel. The village was founded in 1204 by Cistercian monks on land given to them by King John, who had his very own royal hunting lodge at Beaulieu. During the 1530s after Henry VIII’s dissolution of the monasteries, Beaulieu passed into ownership of present Lord Montagu’s ancestors and has remained with the family ever since. Throughout the village you can see charming long-standing houses, quaint gift shops as well as the much loved New Forest donkeys and ponies roaming the picturesque village.
Alongside Beaulieu River you can find Exbury Gardens, home to the Rothschild family that features a striking 20 miles of pathways, three woods and a multitude of ponds. Unfortunately it is now closed for the season but will be open for a two weekends in December and then open fully for guests next March.
Further down the river bank you’ll find the peaceful haven of Buckler’s Hard, a former shipbuilding village preserved in time. The museum tells the story of the 18th century shipbuilding village focusing on its vessels including those built for Nelson’s Navy.
The biggest attraction in Beaulieu is the famous and much loved National Motor Museum which was founded by the current Lord Montagu of Beaulieu. The museum houses hundreds of cars including legendary motor vehicles from around the world containing Britain’s record-breaking Bluebird. Your ticket doesn’t only get you in to see the incredible selection of cars but also into the Victorian, gothic styled country home the Palace House. Once inside let costumed guides give you a flavour of life ‘below stairs’.
Afterwards, take a walk around Beaulieu Abbey a once vast medieval and see the history of the monks who once lived there. If you’re a fan of Top Gear then make sure you take a tour around their World of Top Gear museum. You’ll be able to see unique behind the scenes footage from Top Gear HQ and explore the Challenge Gallery to see cars from memorable TV challenges.
The fun doesn’t even stop there, take a trip on their monorail or veteran bus or if the weather is nice the kids can play in the play park whilst you relax and enjoy the simple pleasures of spending time with loved ones. Throughout the year Beaulieu holds an array of events from fairs to rallies, there really is fun for all the family all year round!
Amongst all the attractions there’s also more simple pleasures to enjoy like a riverside picnic, exploring through the High Street, having a bite to eat in the cafes and restaurants whilst admiring the roaming neighbouring animals.
