Bolderwood Deer Sanctuary and Gruffalo Trail – Take a visit to Bolderwood Deer Sanctuary with a purpose-built viewing platform overlooking the field where the deer roam, the platform itself is a great photo opportunity so you can get plenty of snaps! If you head down between 12pm and 3pm you may be lucky enough to watch the keeper feeding the deer.
Opposite the car park there is a field which is great for a picnic and letting the kids run off some steam. For the younger children you can also download the Gruffalo Spotter App, free of charge. Then, whilst visiting Bolderwood you can search for clues and collect evidence along the trail which lead to footprint marker posts, point the app at the and watch via the VR as Mouse, Fox, Snake, Owl and the Gruffalo all come to life! This trail is open until 3rd September 2017. It starts at the Bolderwood visitor site and is approximately 1 mile. You can also purchase a Gruffalo activity kit for £3, the kit contains an evidence collection bag, fact and activity cards, stickers, ruler, pencil and a special magnifying glass. Parking at the Bolderwood site is only £2 per car.
Reptile Centre – The reptile centre is a small attraction at Holidays Hill and is great if your kids love snakes, lizards and toads; all kept in air netted pens and a very natural environment with lots of places to hide. The reptiles are the easiest to spot on a warm summer’s day as they will be basking in the sunshine. Here you can also find two of Britain’s rarest species, the smooth snake and the sand lizard. Afterwards enjoy a short walk through the ancient and ornamental woodland or enjoy a picnic in the designated picnic area. The centre is open daily from 10am to 4:30pm with no entry fee, however there is a £2 per car parking charge.
Moors Valley – With plenty of things to see and do, Moors Valley is a fun family day out for all. They have recently added a Ranger Den where you can learn about the creatures that live at Moors Valley which showcases a variety of free activities and wildlife displays.
The kids can play and explore on the ‘play trail’, take a look inside giant ‘ant nests’, ‘snake pit’, and the ‘crocodile crossing’. The trail is approximately 1 mile long and is also suitable for pushchairs, wheelchairs and mobility scooters. There are also two play areas designed for children including a zip slide, space net, climbing boulder and plenty of towers and crossings to get their imaginations going. For smaller children the castle and sandworks area has gentler slides and swings. Moors Valley is free entry, open daily from 8am to 7pm during August. The car park charges £3.50 for 1 hour and £10 for up to 4 hours.
Once you’ve finished your day of fun, we’ll greet you back to the hotel with a clean room, plumped pillows and plenty of refreshments.
