A change in the seasons
Autumn in the New Forest
As summer leaves us behind and autumn comes our way, we can’t help but get excited for all the changes we start to see throughout the New Forest. For those of you that haven’t visited us during autumn, here’s a glimpse at what you can expect to see throughout the upcoming months.
The first signs of autumn that appear throughout the New Forest are acorns falling and blackberries ripening which lets us know that seasonal crumbles & pies will be on the menu soon! When the acorns begin to fall, Pannage season starts, so expect to see New Forest Commoner’s pigs roaming freely across the National Park to snuffle up all of the acorns which are poisonous to New Forest ponies, cattle & donkeys.
Our favourite sight to see this season are the leaves changing colour from all shades of summer greens to rich golds, oranges and reds. To witness this stunning show of colour, head to our ancient woodlands where oak and birch trees put on the main show. If you’re taking a stroll across the heathlands, then you’ll see heather in vibrant hues of pinks and purples, providing the last of nectar for the bees before they hibernate throughout the winter.
Along with the more common flowers and plants you expect to see throughout autumn, there is also plenty of unique and rare species that come to life during the colder months including Autumn Lady Tresses. The majority of these bloom from early August until late September, adding a splash of white and pale greens and yellows across the heathland floor.
The best way to explore all that the New Forest has to offer this autumn is definitely on foot. Crunch your way amongst the fallen leaves as you take one of our walking routes through our woodlands. There are ample walks to choose from but we’d recommend the walking trails at Bolderwood for some spectacular colours from the beach and oak trees, as well as the Blackwater Tall Trees Trail which features a collection of trees from around the world.
Whether you’re travelling with the little ones or not there is plenty of things to see and do this season & here are some dates for your diary:
