A taste of down-under
Mon 14 November 2011
Grant Armstrong from Accolade Wines, was welcomed back to The Glasshouse Restaurant at our
BEST WESTERN Forest Lodge Hotel last week as he wooed guests with his knowledge and expertise on four fabulous Australian wines.
Guests arrived to enjoy a glass of the ‘Aussie Sparkler’, Berri Estates Cuvee Brut, in the cosy cellar bar. Stevyn Nash, the hotel’s Assistant Manager introduced the evening before handing over to the charismatic Kiwi, Grant.
Guests soon moved into the two rosette Glasshouse Restaurant where restaurant manager Jean Bui demonstrated why his restaurant holds such high accolades. A starter of pan roasted scallops and pork belly with a caramelised cauliflower puree was served with a delicious and tangy Riesling from Clare Valley. The juicy acidity and lemony citrus flavours worked well at cutting through the richness of the pork belly.
Next up was a meat eater’s delight. A creative dish of breast of Guinea Hen served on a wellington of the leg meat creating a rich and strong flavour contrasting perfectly with the sweetness of the Chantenay carrots. The light and plumy Merlot complimented the gameness of the bird and demonstrated perfectly how red wines don’t all have to be drunk with red meat!
To finish was a trio of fruity flavours: a lemon posset, orange tart and a lime and raspberry sorbet, which together with the Brown Borthers Late Harvest Orange Muscat and Flora from Victoria, were the perfect end to a perfect meal.
Grant’s knowledge of the wines, Jean’s expert service and the award-winning food worked together to create an evening to remember with all guests leaving with a full tummy and a smile on their faces!
