Wine should add joy to life!
Fri 30 September 2011
Last night 30 guests appreciated four fabulous South African wines from the highly reputable Flagstone Winery under the expert guidance of Grant Armstrong from Accolade wines.
The evening began with guests milling in the beautiful gardens of our village hideaway in Burley, Moorhill House Hotel, before the sun went down. Guests sipped a cool and refreshing sparkling Pongracz Brut while Grant and Darren Canning, the assistant manager of the hotel, introduced the evening in the lounge.
Dinner was then served in the Vereley room. The mouth watering three-course dinner began with a smoked haddock and potato terrine which was accompanied by a tropically fruity white wine. The two matched each other perfectly and the dish really helped to intensify the aromatic flavours of the wine.
The main course of venison stew, dauphinoise potatoes and braised red cabbage was served with a rich red with hints of dark-berries and a warming sensation; a divine combination.
For those that still had room for dessert a deliciously refreshing sauvingnon blanc accompanied a beautifully cooked poached pear with a spicy and unusual cinnamon ice-cream.
The most delicious dinner with four fantastic wines to match. Grant’s knowledge of the wine and anecdotes of the Flagstone Winery and the owner, Bruce Jack, provided everyone with much to talk about.
Alex O’Neill, the manager of Moorhill House Hotel, commented "It was wonderful to have the opportunity to showcase our hotel, food, wine and service to local people within the relaxed and intimate setting of the evening. There were lots of appreciative noises from the audience so we hope to see people come back again soon to taste our new autumn menu".
