Bartley Lodge Hotel was once the home of the famous geologist Charles Lyell, a man who not only changed the way the world viewed the formation of the Earth, but was also an influential friend of Charles Darwin. It is also rumored that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the infamous author of Sherlock Holmes, spent some time at Bartley Lodge whilst writing his novels. His grave stone can be found in church yard in nearby Minstead.
